Hoist With His Own Petard

He wrote the book on this opening. « Fearless Chess

Hamlet:

There's letters seal'd, and my two schoolfellows,
Whom I will trust as I will adders fang'd—
They bear the mandate, they must sweep my way
And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For 'tis the sport to have the enginer
Hoist with his own petard, an't shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon.

Here is game in Chess Flash format that can be find at the link above to the new wave blog " Fearless Chess" I call it new wave because of the clear and lucid style the blog is written along with his amateur games in Chess Flash format complete with analysis in his own words.

This blog and game was pointed out to me by Atomic Patzer at a local chess quad event in New Jersey in June 2009. Atomic mentioned that the amateur player upset a well known New Jersey master , which was posted on his blog "Fearless Chess". The NM played his favorite opening as black and unfortunately for him, he lost in an upset.

Note: Here is NJ National Master's chess blog post on this upset....diamondback

What interesting about this upset, is the NJ Master wrote the book on the opening , which is the Philidor CounterGambit he played as black against the amateur player.

There is some light analysis in the game below by Fritz 8.

Note: just click on analysis in chess flash scoresheet moves below and the variation will highlight in red and you will be able to play out the variations

  1. Diamondback:
Thank you for the kind words about my blog, Fearless Chess. And thank you for adding a link to it on your blog list. I have two small corrections to make about your post. First, my name is Bruce Till. People often change my first name to Brian as well as my last name to Tillman for some reason. No big deal, though. Second, you copied move 25 of the game as 25.Rd3 rather than 25. Re3, attacking the Black queen on e8. And thank you for adding the analysis by Fritz. I have Fritz 9 myself, but I am too lazy to run my games through it. Besides, in my blog, I try to emphasize improvements in one's mindset as one plays a game, rather than trying to prove things with raw analysis. I do my light analysis on the fly as I am editing and cross my fingers that is correct.
If you or any of your readers are interested, I have a website, www.brucetill.com , that has a link to the aforementioned blog, as well as some content on the site itself.
Again, thank you so much for including me in your excellent blog, Diamondback Chess.

  2. Thanks Bruce for your comments ! I replaced the Chess Flash game to reflect the corrected game score on move 25... Re3 and corrected the spelling of your last name..... Atomic Patzer where are you when I need you to proof read my blog posts ?? (inside joke)

Your chess blog was pointed out to me by Atomic Patzer, who has his own video chess blog. I have to add Atomic Patzer likes your blogging style immensely and I have to add your chess blog is very fresh and new compare to the other chess blogs that are out there now.

  3. Thanks for fixing move 25 in the game. One little favor, though? Can you change Tillman to Till in the ChessFlash heading? Thanks!

Also, thanks for the additional nice comments about the blog. I just thought nobody would be interested in raw game scores or what I had for dinner last night. I try to make each game like a little lesson or a story. Al Horowitz used to write like that in his books on openings. He called it a Chess Movie. It had 10 diagrams for the whole game and short commentaries beneath each one, along with the moves. He also like to use funny words like "sockdolager" or "denouement" instead of "winning move." My blog isn't exactly like that, but I try to add some relevant comments and some interesting or funny prose. I'll keep working on it. Keep reading, because I used to live in NJ and still play in the USATE every year with Tim Hall, Brian Katz, and Glenn Petersen (and formerly Gerry Kirzner). So you may see the names of some people you know, along with theirs scalps (gamescores)!
